Time for your foot bath!

I know, I promised to write about foot baths already last week. I hope you haven’t missed it too much!

Foot baths is a new craze of mine. I have noticed that when caring properly for the feet, it relaxes the whole body and affects the overall well-being. If you have a head-ache, try a foot bath before painkillers!

Just pour some hot water into a big bowl and you’re off. If you like to, you can scrub your feet with some foot scrub (I’ll provide you with recipes another time), or with a mild soap and a foot brush – pumice stone works nicely. You will probably find that after having added some oil etc. (see below) to your you will not need to moisturize afterward. If you still feel the need, my favourite is plain shea butter, or a lotion with beeswax and a fatty oil.

There’s heaps of things you can add to your foot bath to moisten, clean and refresh your feet. Try one or more of the following:

  • Bath salts. Common salt works great as bath salt, or if you like you can use epson salt or glaubersalt. I use coarse-grained sea salt, just because I think it looks prettier in the jar! Use the salt as such, or mix in some herbs. The herbs will need to mix with the salt for at least two weeks before using. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to the salt. Some herbs I like to use: rosemary, thyme, lavender, rose petals, jasmine flowers, red clover, chamomile, nettles… For essential oils, you can try any of the above, or for instance orange, bergamot, sandalwood, ylang-ylang. These are all great for dry, hard skin. Or just take anything you think smell nice.
  • Bath bags. This is basically the same as bath salt, only put the stuff in small cloth bags. Apotheblogary has a nice recipe for a bath bag. You can also put the herbs in a bath bag, and the salt straight into the bath. I have found that the herbs can be a bit messy to clean up afterward, but if they are in a bag, it’s a piece of cake.
  • Infusions. Instead of putting the herbs straight in the bath, you can make an infusion that you add to the bath. Boil around a fourth of the bath water together with the herbs and pour in with the rest.
  • Bran bath. Put a bit of oat bran in a muslin cloth bag, and leave it in your bath, it will moisturize and soothe your feet. You can also rub the bag against your feet for a light wash and scrub. Add a few tablespoons of milk or yogurt for more moisturizing, and the feeling of bathing in breakfast cereal!
  • Oils. A little bit of vegetable oil makes your feet soft and nice. Try olive oil, avocado oil or grapeseed oil. You seriously need only a few drops.
  • Essential oils. Add a few drops of essential oil straight to the bath for a nice smell and the different benefits of the eo:s.
  • Honey is great for most things, also for your feet. Especially if you have very dry and cracked feet, honey will moisten and heal.
  • Glycerin. I tend to add a drop of glycerin to the foot bath for its moistening qualities.

These things can of course be added to full body baths as well by increasing the amounts somewhat.
